When should I start exploring medicine?

You can start exploring medicine at any age. Year 10 and 11 are great times to learn more about the profession, attend medical careers events and look into volunteering or work experience opportunities. By Year 12, you should start thinking more seriously about medical school requirements, work experience, the UCAT and the application process.

Do I need work experience to apply for medical school?

Medical schools do not all have the same requirements, but gaining experience of healthcare can help you develop a realistic understanding of medicine. What matters is not simply the number of hours you complete, but what you learn from your experiences and how you reflect on them.

What type of work experience can I do as a medical applicant?

There are many ways to explore healthcare. You could consider hospital or GP placements, volunteering in care homes or hospices, healthcare charities, medical insight days, virtual work experience, careers events or medical workshops. If you cannot secure a traditional hospital placement, there are still plenty of ways to learn about healthcare.
